Relevant for All Internationals who Work in Germany: Understanding the German Tax System

As a student, you don't usually have to worry about taxes. If you have a part-time job and earn a good income, you may have to pay tax. You can reduce your tax burden with your tuition fees, travel costs or other study expenses.

25

If you are already working, you automatically pay taxes, which your employer deducts directly from your salary.

The German state uses this money to fund infrastructure, education and healthcare, for example.

The tax system in Germany is complex, especially for internationals.

26

By fling a tax return at the end of the year, you can get some of the taxes you have paid back if, for example, you have a long commute to work or need to buy work equipment.
